Aylesbury Opera presents Saint-Saëns’ biblical epic in a fully staged production with orchestra. Performances will be sung in French (with English surtitles). We have assembled a fine cast, conducted by Musical Director Kelvin Lim, with stage direction and design by Alison Marshall.

Performances will end at about 10pm.

The Opera

Inspired by Handel and Mendelssohn, Saint-Saëns began writing the Old Testament story of Samson as an oratorio. He was persuaded by others, including Liszt, that the subject was better suited to opera. Initially slow to be accepted in France, Samson et Dalila soon became a staple of the repertory for opera houses around the world. Love, lust, vengeance, betrayal, fear, victory, and sacrifice are made visceral in this timeless opera, which is considered one of the great predecessors to the verismo movement.

The Story

Samson has been given strength and courage from God to lead the Hebrews in a deadly rebellion against the Philistines, where the name ‘Samson’ strikes fear into the hearts of his enemies. Only one woman has the power to bring him down, and she has vengeance in her heart. Dalila seeks to seduce Samson in the famous aria Mon cœur s’ouvre à ta voix in her attempt to make him reveal the source of his strength.
