“6 months ago I wouldn’t even sing in front of my Mum! And now I’m singing with an orchestra!”
With the growing public interest in operatic singing – often through TV talent shows – there is now, more than ever, an opportunity for the rebirth of opera through young people. My experience has been that in schools, when children hear someone singing operatically, live and often for the first time ever, they are utterly stunned! Some will laugh, some will try to make the sound themselves and others will be simply silent in awe.
With the aim of harnessing that current interest, we are setting up Aylesbury Youth Opera (AYO). This will be an hour a week during term time, working on vocal technique, learning solos and choruses from operas, exploring dramatic settings and working towards an end of year performance.
AYO Weekly Sessions Include:
Classical vocal training
Work on solos and choruses
Exploring dramatic context
Preparation for participation in AO staged production (Jenufa – March 2021)
End of term performance
£50 per term (10 sessions)
